This is Jim Korkis. Thanks for posting these photos, John, and for contacting me.
I have very many fond memories of those musicals and the people who participated.
I don't think the students really appreciated the extra work that Mrs. Eulene Dorr
and Mr. Tom Murie put into those productions in terms of adapting "adult" music
for junior high school level. I picked "Pirates" and "Mikado" because the
Huntington budget was so small that we couldn't afford to pay royalties for a
musical and those two were in public domain and I had recently graduated from
Occidental College where I had performed in both shows (in the chorus).
It was very gratifying when my former drama teacher from Oxy saw the productions
and told me he enjoyed them more than the semi-professional ones he had directed
at Oxy. In fact, over the years, I received many comments that the Huntington
productions were more professional and entertaining than professional theater
productions. All of that credit goes to the students who participated and
stretched themselves beyond what they thought they could do. I directed and wrote
(or rewrote shows, adding in more female parts, adding lines so that everyone had
a chance to talk) for over a decade. I remain very proud not only of the shows
themselves but of the professionalism, dedication and talent of all the students
who made it to the final production. I don't think the band ever got enough credit
for really making the shows so impressive. Certainly, Mrs. Dorr never got enough
credit for all the work she did. I can still see her in my mind sitting at that
piano. Yes, I have lots of photos, programs, the original scripts, etc. but they
are all boxed up and will get to them as soon as I can so that you can continue
to share these memories with others who I hope remember them as fondly as I do.
For the last fifteen years I have been working at Walt Disney World as a
performer, writer, teacher and more. Every now and then a former student will
track me down. I guess with the internet, anything is possible. Fortunately, it
is the students who liked me that tracked me down, not the ones who had
"challenges" with my teaching style...the teaching style of a smart aleck,
idealistic young teacher who was going to conquer the world and set high
standards. I might do things differently nowadays. Hard for me to believe that
those 12 and 13 year olds are now at least in their Forties and with kids of
their own who probably attend Huntington. Once again, my belated thanks go out to
everyone from the performers, band, chorus, band stage people and more who really
created magic...while struggling to maintain their regular school work. I know
that those performances gave a great deal of joy and smiles to so many audience
members over the years.

I have had so much fun re-living this piece of my history. I am so grateful to
Michael and John for giving me the opportunity to hear the old recordings.
(Mine had been destroyed over the years.) What a tribute to the students and
teachers- very impressive! I am sure that my stint with Operetta at 11 years old
forged my path to Opera singing. Thanks to Mrs Dorr, Mr. Murie and Mr. Korkis!
And thanks to all who contributed to this site. Michele Patzakis Prappas

I also worked on Auntie Mame. The special privilege was working with you and

Michael: I want to thank you for putting in the time to honoring the SMHS music
program under Tom Murie. As an alumni of SMHS music program (class of 71' -
DM and JPS Award), this website helps keep the Titan Spirit alive within the
music family at SMHS. Mr. Murie has been a great inspiration to many as well as
myself. I try to keep his commitment to high musical standards every day as the
music continues at San Marino HS.

As a football player I didn't fully appreciate the hard work the band put in for SMHS,
but after living across the street from a high school for years listening to the marching band
practice every single morning before school started....well, I have a whole new attitude!!
Thanks for saving some of the SMHS memories!
